Gannett Cares

Gannett Cares is a program established to help our employees cope with unexpected financial hardships as a result of a catastrophic disaster. Impacted employees are able to apply for tax-free financial gap funding from Gannett Cares which is supported by Gannett Co. and the Gannett Foundation and administered by a third party. Employees who desire to support their colleagues by making tax deductible donations to the fund through the YourCause portal, available on the OKTA dashboard. 100% of donations go the Fund.

What is Gannett Cares?

Gannett Cares is a program established to help our employees cope with unexpected hardships that place undue financial stress on them and their families as a result of a catastrophic disaster as determined by program administrators.

Who manages Gannett Cares?

The application portal, decision-making and fund management is handled by our third-party partner, Global Impact (Administrator).

What is considered a catastrophic disaster?

A catastrophe is defined as a great, often sudden calamity and include hurricanes, tornados, floods, wildfires, and winter storms.

What types of property damage or hardships will be considered?

Interior and exterior home damage, vehicle damage and temporary housing.

Who is eligible?

Full time and part time US Gannett employees that have sustained damage to their primary residence or incur financial hardship as the result of a catastrophic disaster.
Employees are eligible for one grant per year.

How much can I receive?

Payouts will be determined based on several factors to include the number of employees affected, the available funds, and the severity of damage. Please note that payout amounts are not designed to cover the full scope of the damage but to assist employees in meeting deductibles and to cover other unexpected out of pocket expenses.

Are the same amounts given for each disaster event?

The available pool of funds may change from one disaster to the next. Funds are limited to the amount in the Gannett Cares Fund and any additional funds raised immediately following a qualified event.

What is the process to apply for assistance?

Employees in the geographic area impacted by the disaster event will receive a link to the application from Human Resources. Applicants will need to register, complete all fields and include photos and detailed descriptions of your unique situation.

I don’t have access to a computer or smart phone, how do I apply?

Please contact AskHR, an associate will complete the application with you over the phone.

If I don’t have email, how will I be notified of the outcome?

Human Resources will contact you with the outcome.

Who reviews the applications and makes the award determination?

All applications and decisions are made by our third-party administrator, Global Impact. Decisions are based on preset guidelines.

Is the program confidential?

Yes, applications and decisions are reviewed only by the third-party Administrator. Human Resources will verify employee status before payout.

What is the approval process?

The Administrator will perform a preliminary review to ensure impact from a qualifying disaster exists and that all required documentation has been received. The applicant will be contacted if additional information is needed. The Administrator will then conduct final application review to determine eligibility and grant amounts. Applicants will be notified by email.

How long does it take to receive application approval?

Once all necessary documentation is received a decision will be rendered within 10 business days when possible.

How will payments be dispersed?

Payments will be made via direct deposit through payroll. Note that payments align with pay periods. Timing of the payout will align with the closest regularly scheduled pay date.

My application was denied, may I appeal?

You may reapply once if you have information that was not provided in your first application that you believe may change the outcome.

How is Gannet Cares funded?

Gannett Cares is a partnership between Gannett Co. and the Gannett Foundation. Donations are made to the fund by Gannett Co., the Foundation and generous Gannett employees.

How can I donate to the fund?

Donations can be made through payroll deduction, credit or debit card via the YourCause chicklet on the OKTA dashboard. As with all donations to eligible organizations, donations to the Gannett Cares fund are eligible for matching, which you would request during the donation process. All donations are tax deductible.
